Terms of Service
Last updated: July 28, 2026
These terms govern your use of Folio, a desktop application for recognizing text in documents on your own computer. By installing or using Folio, you agree to them.
License
You are granted a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use Folio on devices you own or control, for personal or commercial purposes. You may not resell, rent or redistribute the application, or attempt to reverse engineer, decompile or modify it except where that restriction is prohibited by law.
Cost
Folio is provided free of charge through the Microsoft Store. There are no in-app purchases and no subscription. Distribution through the Store is additionally subject to Microsoft's own terms.
Your documents and your responsibility
You keep all rights to the documents you process. You are responsible for having the legal right to process the files you import, and for how you use the recognized text — particularly with copyrighted material or documents containing other people's personal information.
Folio stores everything locally on your computer. If you delete its data folder or lose the device, that data is gone — we hold no copy and cannot restore it.
Backups
Folio is not a backup service. Your imported files, recognized text and edits exist only on your own machine. Maintaining backups of anything you care about is your responsibility.
Accuracy of recognition
Text recognition is inherently imperfect. Results vary with scan quality, handwriting, layout complexity and language, and errors and omissions will occur. Folio shows each page next to its original so you can verify the output. Do not rely on recognized text for legal, medical, financial or other consequential purposes without checking it against the source document yourself.
Third-party components
Folio downloads and runs open-source components, including the llama.cpp runtime and PaddleOCR-VL model files, obtained from GitHub and Hugging Face. Those components are provided by their respective authors under their own licenses and terms, and their availability is outside our control.
Disclaimer of warranty
Folio is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the application will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that recognition results will be accurate or complete.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for any loss of data, profits or business, arising from your use of or inability to use Folio. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law, and you may have statutory rights these terms do not affect.
Changes to these terms
These terms may be updated from time to time. The current version is always posted on this page with its date. Continuing to use Folio after a change means you accept the revised terms.
