Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 28, 2026
Folio is a desktop application that recognizes text in documents on your own computer. This policy explains what happens to your data. The short version: your documents stay on your machine, and we never see them.
Folio has no user accounts, no analytics and no server component. Document content is never transmitted off your device.
Information we collect
None. Folio does not collect, transmit or store any personal information. There is no account to create, no email address to provide, no usage analytics, no crash reporting and no advertising or tracking technology of any kind.
Your documents
The files you import, the page images produced from them, the recognized text, your manual edits, your export history and your settings are written only to a folder on your own computer. Text recognition is performed locally by software running on your machine. Document content is never uploaded, never sent to us or any third party, and never used to train any model.
Because this data lives on your computer, it is covered by your own backups and your own device security. Removing the application's data folder removes it permanently; we hold no copy and cannot recover anything for you.
Network connections
Folio works offline once it is set up. It connects to the internet only in these cases, and never sends document content when it does:
- Downloading the recognition engine. Folio downloads the llama.cpp runtime from GitHub. This happens only after you confirm.
- Downloading model files. Folio downloads the PaddleOCR-VL model files from Hugging Face. This happens only after you choose a model and confirm.
- Checking for engine updates. When you ask Folio to check for a newer llama.cpp release, it queries GitHub for the latest version number.
These requests are ordinary file downloads and version checks. They carry no account identifier and no information about your documents. GitHub and Hugging Face will receive your IP address as they would for any download, and their own privacy policies apply to that. Folio makes no other outbound connections.
Children's privacy
Folio is not directed at children and collects no information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date. Continuing to use Folio after a change means you accept the revised policy.
